Park Seo-Bo Ecriture/White Cube

February 10, 2016

Park Seo-Bo Ecriture (描法) 1967-1981 at White Cube Mason's Yard / Monochrome ArtThe current exhibition of paintings by Korean artist Park Seo-Bo at White Cube Mason’s Yard in London is another confirmation of an ongoing fascination with monochrome art, particularly with the Korean monochrome movement Dansaekhwa. The exhibition curated by Katharine Kostyál, is the first solo UK exhibition of the artist  who is best known for “Ecriture” series of paintings. The exhibition traces the origins of these works and includes the 16 paintings made between 1967–81. Park Seo-Bo is considered as the father of the Dansaekhwa group, and alongside Lee Ufan is one of the leading figures in Korean contemporary art.

Park Seo-Bo “Ecriture” paintings are the result of his exploration of introspective methodology that had its origins in Taoist and Buddhist philosophy and also in the Korean tradition of calligraphy. Park in the “Ecriture” paintings eliminates any form of gesture, focusing on a sense of dynamic continuity through repeated pencil lines incised into the paintings’ monochrome surfaces. The white incisions in his works are fundamental and his calligraphic marks reflect his interest in reaching a sense of pure emptiness, an attempt that is made afresh with each new painting. The exhibition is on display till March.

“My work is […] related to the oriental tradition of space, the spiritual concept of space. I am more interested in space from the point of view of nature. Even though my paintings may represent an idea about culture, the main focus is based on nature […] I want to reduce the idea and emotion in my work to express only that. I want to reduce and reduce – to create pure emptiness.” Park Seo-Bo ( 2006)
